ChromeOS Version 128 Gets Snapped Windows and Optical Text Recognition in Camera App

Eligible Chromebook devices will soon receive the update for ChromeOS version 128.

New features include the following:

User Settings

  • Snap Groups: This new update adds the ability to click the maximize button and group your windows into an equal split screen that snaps apps into equal tiles on the screen.

  • Better Privacy Controls: You can now go to Apps -> Manage Your Apps and individually toggle which apps have access to your camera, mic, and/or location. The general Privacy control panel also remains as a second place to toggle it globally.
  • Auto Gain Control: This is a feature that allows ChromeOS to take over the mic input volume and automatically adjust it for the best sound quality.

Accessibility Features

  • Text-Extraction from Image (Optical Character Recognition): This is a feature that enables the Camera app to recognize text from pictures. This is a helpful accessibility feature as well as document one. I was able to hold up a book cover, take a picture of it in the Camera app, and save it as a PDF which can now recognize and search its text, which is impressive considering I was using the 0.3 MP camera on my lowest-end Chromebook.

  • Magnifier follows ChromeVox: Magnifier helps visually-impaired users follow text they’re reading aloud automatically.
