Learn Chromebook Tech Support: Free Course on Udemy

While ChromeOS is known for its ease of use and its “just works” simplicity that requires minimal tweaking, there may be times where you may have to provide tech support to others or learn how to fix issues yourself. For example, if you’re a tinkerer and go down rabbit holes of changing or breaking settings, it’s helpful to know how to reset things from scratch. The free Chromebook Tech Support course on Udemy will help you do just that: build up some basic ChromeOS troubleshooting and support skills.

The course objectives will teach you how to:

  • Power wash a Chromebook (as in factory reset; put away that garden hose).
  • How to sideload Android apps not available in the Play Store with Developer mode.
  • How to install a Linux app store.
  • How to use Chromebook flags and URLs to enable experimental features.
  • How to create a managed Google account for your kids and and setup Google Family Link.
  • How to turn an old PC into a ChromeOS device (Cloud Ready has been deprecated and is now ChromeOS Flex).

One downside is that the course is a little older (it was last updated in 2022). However, during my review, I found that the only outdated information is the last bullet point. Google bought Cloud Ready which is now Chrome OS Flex, a version of ChromeOS that can be installed on non-ChromeOS devices to extend the life of an old PC or Mac that no longer receives updates.

I found some of the skills of the course to be pretty basic (for example, the power washing and sanitizing utility is easily available under system settings). However, many people will find utility in learning how to set up the Linux app store and setting up managed Google accounts for their family with Family Link. Learning about experimental flags was also new information for me.

Finally, before doing any tinkering, always make sure you backup all of your files to your Google drive or external storage.
